How to store your soil until you are ready to use it

Posted on: 20 July 2022

Buying soil from a supplier is an easy way to improve your garden and convert new areas for growing. However, you will need to store the soil properly while you are not using it.

How you do this will depend upon how long you need to store it. If you are only keeping it for a few days after delivery before you start working on your project, you can just keep it in its original packaging, away from rain or any other harsh weather. If you are storing any surplus for a longer period of time, you will need to take a little more care.

Check the Soil

Firstly, check the soil for any problems. If it is new and unopened, it should still be in good condition and there is no need to open it to check. Opened bags might have attracted mould or insects. If this is the case you are better off using it immediately in the garden rather than keeping it for later. You should also make sure it is dry. If it has become moist, leave it open somewhere where the air can get to it for a few days.

Packaging

The soil is best stored in its original plastic packaging. If it is labelled, it will tell you exactly what is in the mix and when it was bought (if it doesn't, add a label yourself so you don't forget). You should squeeze as much air out of the bag as possible and then seal the end with tape, trying to make it as airtight as possible.

However, the plastic will probably not be strong enough to keep it safe for any length of time, and could easily be torn by animals or accidents. You will therefore need to place the bags in strong solid storage containers. These should be sterilised before use and should be allowed to dry completely. It is up to you whether to use transparent containers - opaque ones will keep out the sunlight, which might otherwise cause the soil to deteriorate, but you will not be able to see what is inside. You can then simply lift the bags into the containers. Close the lid and put a label on it so you know what you are storing. Then simply store the containers somewhere dry and away from the elements.

Proper storage of your soil will ensure it is still in top condition when you come to use it later. Your supplier will be able to give you any further advice. For more information on storing soil, contact a professional near you.

Easy to use garden supplies

My grandparents were always eager gardeners, but over time, between Nana's poor eyesight and Grandpa's arthritis, they are finding it harder and harder do the normal jobs in the garden. I am always on the lookout for easy to use garden supplies to give to them as Christmas and birthday gifts, and I keep a track of the ideas I find here on this blog, so I can share my gift ideas with friends and family as well. It's great to be able to see my grandparents back in the garden, hanging out and having a great time together again.
